A french yellow revolution is coming
According to the French economist Georges Nurdin, all the conditions for the next mega crisis are met. The rest is psychology ... The movement of Yellow Vests in France (#giletsjaunes), like a flight of swallows announcing the storm, shows that the process is already engaged. Because this mega crisis will not only be economic and financial, but as much, if not more, political and societal.
Facing this kind of perspective, which some have already described as historical, what President Macron will say and do (he must ask himself how to live up to the stakes, but with less than an ideological reversal, it seems that this will not be the case, and one may wonder if he is not already overwhelmed by events) does not weigh heavily. The insurrection isn't coming, it is already there.
We are not in the presence of a raging urban guerilla led by groups of thugs and looters, as would like us to believe the Parisian images that loop on the news channels (or rather their comments on television, whose words sometimes say the opposite of what they show), but in front of the possibility of a real popular revolution. And like any revolution, no one can predict the result or completely prevent possible drifts.
If local citizens' committees succeed in organizing and mobilizing the necessary collective intelligence and responsibility, the uprising of "yellow vests" could be a long-term reversalf of the liberal conservative order, at a scale that can quickly become european. There could be a basis for a new narrative to build that could inspire other nations. Artists, in particular, can feel called to contribute to this new narrative.
Another world is possible, as other forms of dialogue, consultation, self-management, initiative, decision-making and decentralized political organization. To build this world by tackling problems like the coming collapse of the prevailing economic and financial order, climate change, preservation of biodiversity, energy transition, regeneration of the environment, local development, economic and social inclusion and solidarity, society doesn't lack neither resources nor skilled spirits on each of these topics. They can contribute to the implementation of a real popular education program, accross a multitude of free universities in all territories.
Popular education and political emancipation go hand in hand. At the local level, there is a strong desire for involvement and participation, as well as resilience capacities. Many alternative experiences are under way (in the fields of energy transition, organization of short economic circuits, participatory democracy, complementary local currencies, etc.) from which it is possible to draw inspiration. Municipalities can organize without waiting for the impetus of the state or institutions. European regions can federate these municipalities and federate themselves at the european level.
The path is free now. The yellow vests have opened it for real. The worst is still possible, but also the best, and this is the good news. This is not a mass movement, but that of a diverse and varied multitude of people beyond their differences. Today, students from middle schools, dockers, farmers and their bigger syndicate joined the yellow vests in the streets, and on the blockades of strategic points. In the night, more than 3000 trucks were stopped at the toll of the Spanish border. And you can already see empty shelves in some stores.
In any case, if we want this movement to lead to something truly constructive, it is urgent to set up free municipalities and to federate them. They could give rise to a speech of renewal without hatred or violence, and launch the process of designing a new constitution. Any delay in this scenario could lead the movement to failure, and put the country in chaos.
